A Visit to Cardinal Glass: Seeing How Glass is Made from the Ground Up

We work with glass every day at M&M Glass Company, but there’s something different about seeing how it’s actually manufactured from raw materials. Recently, our Owner and General Manager had the opportunity to visit Cardinal Glass Industries in Durant, Oklahoma. The experience gave us an even deeper appreciation for the products we provide to our customers across South Louisiana.

Why We Visited Cardinal Glass

Cardinal Glass Industries is one of the major glass manufacturers in North America, with nearly 10,000 employees across 49 locations in the United States. Their Durant facility specializes in “float glass manufacturing”, producing the flat glass that goes into residential windows and doors.

The Flat Glass Manufacturing Process

The Durant facility uses a fascinating process called “float glass manufacturing,” where molten glass is literally floated on molten tin to create perfectly flat glass. Walking through the facility, our team witnessed the incredible precision and technology that goes into every sheet of glass.

The plant operates in a clean, temperature-controlled environment spanning over 700,000 square feet (that’s more than 12 football fields). The scale of this operation is truly impressive, with massive furnaces running continuously to produce the highest quality glass. This eventually makes its way to homes and businesses across the region.
