Glass
-
What is tempered glass?
There are different types of glass for a variety of situations. Tempered glass, also known as laminated or safety glass, can help minimize safety risks and satisfy the requirements of current building codes.
We use tempered safety glass in all of our shower doors. When this glass is broken, it breaks into thousands of small pieces, making potential injury minimal compared to standard annealed glass.
Laminated glass also has a variety of safety and security advantages. It is made of two pieces of annealed glass that are laminated together, for example. When broken, this glass typically stays in place.
-
I have a table top that is chipped. Can you cut it down for me?
For services like this, it depends on the type of glass and the nature of your table top. Please give us a call and we will be happy to evaluate the situation.
-
I’ve noticed that most glass has a slightly green tint. Can I get glass that is totally clear?
Absolutely! Ultra-clear or low-iron glass eliminates the “green tint” that many of our customers dislike. By reducing the iron content, we create glass that has no tint, providing beautiful colorless clarity for your favorite fixtures or shower doors.
Showers
-
What is the difference between heavy glass and framed shower doors?
Heavy glass shower doors are produced from 3/8” or ½” thick glass and are held together with solid brass hardware. They are available in more than twenty unique finishes that are designed to match today’s most popular hardware finishes. Heavy glass shower doors typically cost more than framed shower doors.
On the other hand, framed shower doors are made from 3/16” or ¼” thick glass and are held together with an aluminum frame available in about ten different finishes. These doors are typically more affordable than heavy glass doors.
Our team can walk you through deciding the best option for your bathroom!
-
What are the standard dimensions for a shower door?
Framed shower doors are available in standard heights of 68.5, 72, 80, and 84 inches, as well as custom heights.
Heavy glass doors are cut to custom sizes. However, there are restrictions based on weight and width that vary from shower to shower. Contact our team for a free consultation and we’ll discuss options for your space.
-
What type of glass do most people select for shower doors?
At M&M Glass, 99% of the shower doors we sell are ultra-clear glass. There are a variety of other glass styles that are available and on display in our showroom.
-
How long will it take to get my shower door installed?
This depends on several factors, including whether you select a framed door or a heavy glass door. Production and scheduling availability also tends to vary. During your free consultation, our team will give you a better estimate for your install.
-
Why can’t you measure for my shower if the tile isn’t fully completed?
Every shower area is unique, and we have to have all of the final measurements to make sure we have an absolutely perfect fit. Framed shower doors can be adjusted to fit the space in some circumstances. Heavy glass showers, though, are cut to fit the exact space they are being installed in. They also must be custom cut at a tempering plant. For that reason, we need all components finished before final measurements.
-
Will my shower door leak?
All shower doors have the possibility of leaking, some more than others. At M&M Glass, we discuss this at the initial consultation.
There are a lot of factors that contribute to this, including the:
- Design of the shower
- Size of the shower
- Size and type of shower head
- Number of shower heads
- Direction of the shower heads
- Design of the shower door
- Water pressure
We’ll take a look at your initial shower design and advise you accordingly on the best ways to avoid leaks based on best practices.
-
Why do heavy glass shower doors leak?
While heavy glass shower doors are the most popular, they also have more opportunities to leak than their framed counterparts. This is because heavy glass shower doors are designed with “gaps” that are penetrable by water. At M&M Glass, we try to help you design your shower in a way that minimizes the risk of leaking.
-
If I do not tile my ceiling, can I still make my shower a steam shower?
While it is certainly physically possible to do this, it is not advisable. With an untiled ceiling, mold and mildew can collect and penetrate the drywall leading to damage.
-
I don’t want to install a header on top of my shower door. Can this be avoided?
There are a variety of design options available to support showers at the head. You do not have to always have a header on top of a shower, but depending on design and cost considerations, it is sometimes the best option.
-
I’ve seen pictures of showers where there is no metal other than the hinges and handle. How is this possible?
There are a lot of different ways to design shower doors, and some of the most popular are those with minimal hardware. At our Louisiana glass company, we try to take your vision and make it a reality. We will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of every design you are considering and help you capture your perfect look when possible.
-
What thickness do you recommend for heavy glass shower doors?
Weight is a concern for heavy glass shower doors, but stability is also a concern with taller shower areas. We will recommend the best glass to achieve the design you would like while considering safety, engineering, and cost.
-
How can I best take care of my shower doors?
Regular maintenance, proper plumbing, and cleaning can help ensure that your shower door lasts a lifetime. We recommend that you follow our guidelines for taking care of your shower door before, during, and after installation.
-
Which glass cleaner should I use on my shower doors?
We use Hi-SHEEN to clean all of our mirror and glass pieces and we highly recommend this industrial-strength product as well. Sparkle Cleaner is safe for glass that has a protective coating. It removes light water spots and stains, as well as soap scum.
Bio-Clean Water Stain Remover is a professional strength cleaner recommended by both glazing contractors and professional window cleaning companies. After removing water stains, apply Bio-Clean Superior Silicone Sealant to the surface to prevent future build-up. For optimal results, apply every two to three months.
Mirrors
-
How do I add character or style to my mirrors?
Framed mirrors have a way of completing a room, giving it a unique and textured look.
Stock frames provide a more affordable option, especially if you’re searching for standard sizes. Even though these frames are pre-made, you’ll still find a large variety of high-end finishes and luxurious looks to complement your home.
By choosing to go with custom framed mirrors, the design is in your hands. Our custom frame shop at M&M Glass allows us to create a gorgeous piece made specifically to fit the space and style of your room.
-
Can you work around electrical outlets and light fixtures?
Absolutely! We pride ourselves on crafting pieces that work for your home’s or office’s needs. Custom cut-outs allow us to extend a pane of glass from wall to wall, ceiling to floor. Using mirror cut-outs, we can seamlessly add light fixtures, electrical outlets, and light switches.
-
Do you have lighted mirrors?
Yes. At M&M Glass, we’re here to help you create the home you’ve been dreaming of. Through partnerships with leading LED mirror manufacturers, we’re able to bring you lighted mirrors with beauty and cutting-edge technology.
We can also install TV mirrors that feature a hidden LED HDTV where you can catch up on the news, sports, and much more, all while you’re getting ready in the morning.
