A common question we get is “Which shower cleaning products should I be using?” or “What products are the best shower cleaners?”.
The scent of Mr. Clean has evoked memories of my childhood home for as long as I can recall. It is common to choose cleaning supplies similar to what our parents or guardians used when we were young. Of course, you might be one of the few who went in an entirely different direction, but we’ll explore that later.
Many of us are not fond of the idea of spending a lot on household cleaning items. A lot of the time, these products are difficult to find in your local stores. We’re right there with you. So, what do we do? We add cleaning products from our old friends/brands that have been around for years and are easy to get on short notice.
The Problem with Traditional Glass Cleaners
The most common commercial glass cleaners are known for containing harsh chemicals that can be harmful to both your health and the environment. The most common issues with these chemicals are they irritate your skin, and eyes, and can cause serious damage to your lungs making it harder to breathe. Last but not least, these products can slowly damage your shower frame, glass, and hardware over time!
Common Chemicals in Traditional Glass Cleaners
- Ammonia: This chemical is a strong irritant that can cause breathing and lung problems, especially for people with asthma or allergies.
- Alcohol: While less harmful than ammonia, alcohol can still be drying and irritating to the skin.
- Surfactants are chemicals that can remove the protective oils from your skin and likely to cause your skin to become dry and irritated.
Would you prefer a greener alternative to clean with? Here are a few options:
- White Vinegar: Vinegar is a natural cleaning agent with powerful degreasing properties. To clean glass with vinegar, mix equal parts white vinegar and water in a spray bottle. Apply the solution to the glass and wipe it clean with a microfiber cloth.
- Newspaper: Believe it or not, newspapers can be a great way to clean glass. Dampen a piece of newspaper with water and wipe the glass clean. The newspaper will leave a streak-free finish.
- Baking Soda: Baking soda can be used to remove tough stains and grime from glass. Make a paste of baking soda and water and apply it to the stained area. Let it sit for a few minutes before wiping it clean with a damp cloth.
- Commercial Green Glass Cleaners: Many glass cleaners are available that use natural ingredients and do not contain harmful chemicals.
Tips for Cleaning Glass
Clean your glass often – the easier it is to clean, the less likely you are to need harsh chemicals. When cleaning, do so in a circular motion.
Avoid scrubbing! Glass scratches are easier to make than you think. Scrubbing or “putting in elbow grease” can result in tiny scratches (or big ones…yikes) in your glass.
Do not use anything abrasive when cleaning your shower.
